Reading Rainbow
I have to admit it. I like to read biography’s. I just completed reading Barbara Eden’s book (I can’t remember the name- see this is why I am a horrible blogger because I can’t remember shit). Anyway it was about her I Dream of Jeannie years…or at least most of the book was. It told about her growing up days and how she got started. It was interesting to learn that Larry Hagman was a bit of an asshole. (according to Barbara). I grew up watching that show so I find it interesting to learn some of the “behind the scenes” stuff. I like that kind of thing…I can’t help it. Hell it doesn’t have to be a 70′s TV star, I could read about Abraham Lincoln, if he actually wrote it. I am currently reading Tina Fey’s book called ‘ Bossy Pants’ (see I can remember some stuff). She is a funny woman. I wish I could write like her. She has a way with words, if you will. I think it’s the examples that she gives that makes it so great. I’m not talking about rocket science here, just a great way to explain yourself and communicate your thought. She also reminds me of Whabs! A long time ago in chat…Whabs used a word (I think this is how it got started) and I had no clue what it meant so I looked it up. I think that is how the word of the day got started. I always comment on using the word Aghast…Of course I knew what that word meant, but it’s a word I NEVER think to use. That is how Tina writes. She is very intelligent, or she hired a really good co-writer to help her. Either way I am enjoying this book. I love to read. I don’t always know what books to pick though. I am not a romance reader. It’s not that I hate romance books but it’s just not my “cup of tea”. Besides biography’s I like books that portray a good story. That’s one thing I miss about working with the Troll. She loved to read like I do and she always had a book to tell me about. For instance, she told me about a book called The Book Thief and it blew me away. I have always been interested in Hitler and that time period in Germany. I should say that I don’t like Hitler at all, I just am drawn to that time for some strange reason. I guess I can’t believe that any one person could order such horrific acts on a group of people. The torture and sadness that followed was so horrible…it breaks my heart but it’s like I just have to know more about it. There was a customer one time that was in the office (the office that I worked with the Troll) and she talked about living over there when she was a little girl during that time and her father was killed. It’s the first and only person that I have known that was affected by this. Anyway, ‘The Book Thief’ is about a little girl whose mother is forced to send her and her brother to live with a family because she can’t support her any longer. They were Germans who were against Hitler and what he was doing. The little girl’s father was killed and the mother was poor and couldn’t take care of her children. During the train ride to take her kids to another home, the brother is very sick and dies. They have to stop the train to bury him. The person that is digging the grave has a book for gravediggers. An instruction manual. The little girl steals the book and starts her new life with an older couple. She continues to steal books and the couple that she lives with take in a Jew to hide. To add another twist to the story, it’s told by the Grim Reaper. He talks about how he is picking up the lives of the Jews, how tired he is because there is so many. He is intrigued by the little girl when he picks up her brothers soul. I probably am not giving a good review. Just know that I loved this book and it’s truly a great read. Anyway, that is the kind of stuff that the Troll would tell me about, so I miss not having that guidance to find a really good book. There’s always the internet, right?!
One other thing I am getting into is knitting. I have always knitted in the winter. It calms my nerves. Plus, I like giving the scarfs I make as gifts. I only know how to make scarfs. I want to learn how to make an afghan. I will have to teach myself how to do that. I’m a watch and learn kind of girl, but you never know what you can accomplish until you set your mind to do it!!
Well, other than that, I’m still plugging away at the job hunting. I’m a little down because I thought I would have a job by now. The GEICO thing really threw me. I had an interview last week with a State Farm agency with in 5 minutes from the house. I haven’t heard anything yet. *sighs*
Ok, better run. Hugs and kisses and all that good stuff!!!
Hahahaha! I almost left a second comment on your lat post because you spelled a word correctly that NOBODY spells correctly.
Tongue
You know, as a kid I was totally sucked in to the Holocaust. I had a teacher in 8th grade and she taught a wicked class on it. Part of why I always thought it was good to learn, was so we don’t make the same mistakes.
More important than atrocities committed, I have always found knowing how so many people could be “swayed” to not see so much, or comply with something so morally reprehensible, like ovens and showers.
I love words, and love that you thought of me when you think of your love of words. It’s like I think of Arie when I think of language, words, or reading.
I TOTALLY HEART TINA FEY!!! And that you think of her and think of me…AWESOME! I totally want to read her book someday, but you know me, I keep going political. Right now it’s Greg Palast and Vultures Picnic. Whoah…very heavy shit…kinda like the stuff that washes on shore after a massive oil spill.
Woah, wait. Why do you think of me when you think of language, words and reading? I butcher our language – even ask snee!
I think of Whabs when I think of words as well – I remember going through school and I’d call her and ask how to spell a word, or what a word meant. It was easier to understand what she was saying rather than try to figure it out from a dictionary.
(Total side note – does anyone remember who started the whole dictionary = “Dicks-in-Arie” thing? I can’t remember, but every time I say, hear, or type the word, that’s all I hear in my head.)
I’m with Whabs on spelling “tongue” correctly – and add in “thief”. Those are two of my top “trigger” words that send me into a rant. That and the two words “a lot”.
(PS – glad to see you’re blogging again. I’ve missed you!)
Eh…maybe you butcher the English language, as do I. But you care about language, books and, words and if you love books like you do, that sticks with other book lovers.
READ A BANNED BOOK TODAY!
I actually stopped myself when I wrote the word “tongue” and I thought…is that right? then realized it just looked funny. I ALWAYS wrote the word alot…I know it’s wrong but still do it…so forgive me if you have seen it in many blogs. I REALLY try to stop and type it properly (A LOT)!
I don’t know about that Arie…I don’t remember ever seeing that…but trust me when I hear the word now I will think of you!
